Growers will gather in Dimboola this Thursday morning to be informed about the latest developments in grains industry research.

New insights into weed control, advances in pulse crops and updated pest management options will be among the topics to be discussed at the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Grains Research Update on August 11.

GRDC South Regional Panel member John Bennett, of Lawloit, says the Grains Research Updates play a pivotal role in keeping growers and their advisers abreast of industry developments.

"Growers each year must deal with a range of constraints that impact on their ability to achieve optimal yields and returns," Mr Bennett said.

"The Updates give our growers the chance to hear about what's new and what could make a difference to their farming systems and their bottom line."

Supported by BCG, the Update will feature expert speakers from throughout Victoria and South Australia.

Chris Preston from the University of Adelaide will offer the latest tips on grass weed and herbicide management, including advice on herbicide carryover issues, particularly in pulses.

Agriculture Victoria's Jason Brand will outline the pulse variety and agronomy packages coming through the pipeline.

The progress of research into the use of bentleg furrow openers at seeding will be detailed by Jack Desbiolles from the University of Adelaide, while Paul Umina from cesar will discuss management options for the new pest Russian wheat aphid and more established pests such as millipedes and slaters.

Understanding the local, regional and export hay market drivers will be the topic of a presentation by Jumbuk Consulting's Colin Peace.

The Update will be at the Dimboola Memorial Secondary College Assembly Hall from 9am to 1.15pm, with catering provided. Note the change of venue.
