The Hindmarsh Shire Youth Council has been awarded $10,000 in funding for the creation of a family-friendly, youth-focused tourism brochure.

Each year, the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) and the ABC partner to run and fund projects based on eight brilliant ideas created at the annual Heywire Regional Youth Summit. Following this year's Youth Summit, a funding pool of $100,000 was made available through the 2016 Youth Innovation Grants program to help young people roll out their own projects.

The Youth Council was successful in receiving the maximum funding of $10,000, after their application for a family friendly, youth focused tourism brochure was approved.

Hindmarsh Shire Youth Councillor Georgia Gelligen said, "There were eight ideas to build on and our Youth Council decided that we wanted to go with "Back to Bush - revitalizing small towns."

Georgia added, "As a Youth Councilor, we are given so many opportunities and we know that our home towns could be so much livelier if our city neighbours could visit and see the beauty and fun that we know the country provides to us."

"With the creation of this tourism brochure we hope to work closely with local businesses and tourism ventures and promote hidden local gems and landmarks.

"We want to showcase our natural environment as well as the awesome local businesses we have. We want to encourage people to explore and stay a little longer, hopefully boosting our economy along the way."

One of the reasons the Youth Council decided to participate in the "Back to the Bush - revitalizing small towns" category is that there is currently limited or no promotional material specifically encouraging young families and youth to visit and stay in Hindmarsh Shire.

Georgia concluded, "Our family and youth friendly tourism promotion will produce one brochure of all things fun, including local organisations, pools, leisure activities, tours, land marks, natural wonders and interesting places, festivals, shopping, accommodation and event venues, skate parks, eateries and food establishments and local tourism facilities."

Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor, Cr Debra Nelson, thanked the Youth Council on behalf of Council.

"I would like to congratulate our Youth Council on receiving this grant. We have seen the great things our Youth Council can achieve with their development of the Hindmarsh Shire Youth Strategy 2016-2020 and we look forward to a fantastic family friendly tourism brochure."

Cr Nelson added, "On behalf of both Council and Youth Council, I would like to thank the ABC and FRRR for awarding the Heywire grant funding to this unique project."
