Dimboola Police have received reports of motorists driving around the level crossing gates at High Street while the gates are down and the lights and bells are operating.

While it can be possible for the gates to be down for longer than usual periods of time at this crossing, the risk of crossing against warning lights and bells is no less diminished.

"Crossing while the gates are down is extremely dangerous, and a practice we want to see stopped. Whether it be vehicles or pedestrians, local police will be monitoring the crossing and issuing fines where appropriate. The fine for crossing while the gates are down is $622. This offence carries legislation that allows police to impound vehicles," Sergeant Sadler said.

"The risk of a tragedy occurring is very real if people disobey warning signals and the gates. We encourage anyone with information about motorists driving around the gates to contact Dimboola Police, and follow up action will occur."
