The West Wimmera Cricket Association "s 2016/17 season hit off on Saturday with two games, including a clash between the grand finalists from last season.

The number of teams contesting this competition has dropped from five to four after the Rainbow club chose not to field a team this year. After establishing that they would struggle for players, particularly prior to the break, they reluctantly make the decision not to enter a team, but they remain affiliated with the Association in anticipation of returning to the field for the 2017/18 season.

The victory target was passed in the 31st over and Michael Preston (43 not out) and Victor Lothian (13 not out) batted out the last four overs to take the score to 6 for 162.

Round Two Preview

The first of the two day games will commence next Saturday with the two winners from the first round meeting on the Winiam ground and the vanquished teams clashing on Davis Park.

Despite the home ground advantage, the Winiam team will need to have more contributors with the bat if they are to score a winning score against a solid Jeparit attack.

The outcome of the other game will influenced by Kiata's ability to put a full side on the field and if they do they will be very competitive, but the Nhill Tigers will be determined to prove that they are still the team to beat.
