A program to provide funding to assist with the preservation of local history is now open for applications.

The Public Record Office's Local History Grants Program offers up to $15,000 for projects which preserve and share local history stories.

Member for Lowan Emma Kealy encourages local organisations to apply for this funding.

"The long running Local History Grants Program is a great opportunity for local community groups to receive small grants to help preserve records or publish Victorian local history," Ms Kealy said.

Projects that have been supported in the past through the Local History Grants include the digitisation and preservation of newspapers, sporting club records, virtual exhibitions and websites, filmmaking and playwriting, historical walks and restoration of historical costumes.

"The diversity of past successful projects shows just how important it is to preserve our history for future generations to enjoy," Ms Kealy said.

All not-for-profit community groups are eligible to apply, including historical societies, schools, sporting clubs and special interest groups.

Applications for the Local History Grants Program close on 31 January 2017. For further information or to apply visit prov.vic.gov.au/community-programs/grants-awards/local-history-grants.
