Members of the Dimboola Town Committee have installed new solar lighting along the walking track beside the Wimmera River between the fishing pontoon and Wimmera Street.

The solar lighting system was purchased in kit form with funds from the Victorian Government's Department of Justice and Regulation, Community Crime Prevention Program.

The new solar lighting creates a safer environment for people to walk along the track at night. In order to save battery power the solar lights become brighter as pedestrians approach them and return to a lower light level once they have passed.

Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor Cr Debra Nelson said that "in addition to improving safety and accessibility to the river walking track and fishing pontoon, the installation of the lights further enhances the broader river environment and the adjacent Riverside Holiday Park and Recreation Reserve to locals and visitors".

Chairman of the Dimboola Town Committee, Phil Colquhoun, thanks Council on behalf of the Town Committee for obtaining the funding for these lights.

"Hopefully further funding will be become available in the future to install lighting along the entire walking track as that would significantly improve safety and accessibility to the Riverside Holiday Park," he said.

Cr Nelson added "I would like to thank the members of the Dimboola Town Committee who installed the lights as it is these types of voluntary efforts that are often the difference between obtaining funding for projects or not."
