After facing community backlash surrounding the proposed detour while roadworks were undertaken in Nhill, VicRoads have announced new plans for traffic flow while the works take place.

In order to complete safety improvements on the Western Highway at the bend adjacent to the War Memorial, Adelaide-bound trucks will be detoured along the Melbourne-bound lanes of the Western Highway at Davis Avenue, then via Nhill-Yanac Road and McKenzie Avenue.

Other vehicles can detour via Clarence Street and Pine Street.

Works will begin on Monday 12 December and are expected to take three to four days.

VicRoads had originally planned to detour Adelaide-bound heavy vehicles via the Wimmera Highway at Horsham, travelling to Kaniva via Edenhope.

"We listened to the community's feedback and went back to the drawing board," said VicRoads Regional Director Ewen Nevett.

"While Kaniva-Edenhope Road is safe for use, we had no issue with the negative response from the community and I thank them for their feedback," he said.

"It is important when planning works to consider a number of elements in traffic management and we are confident that this new plan will work for everyone."

VicRoads have spoken with businesses in the area and liaised closely with Hindmarsh Shire Council to ensure that this plan works for everybody.

To ensure the safety of road users and road workers, traffic controllers will be in place to ensure that vehicles travel safely through the area.

"I urge drivers to be aware of the changed traffic conditions when travelling through Nhill and to be mindful of road workers," Mr Nevett said.

"As we get enter the holiday season, I want everyone to stay safe so they can enjoy a happy and safe summer."
