Jeparit Cricket Club celebrates successful season
Members of the Jeparit Cricket Club and their friends and family gathered on Friday evening to celebrate the successful 2016/17 season.

Earlier this month the club defeated Winiam in a low scoring West Wimmera Cricket Association grand final in Nhill to win the club’s sixth premiership since joining the competition in 1960, and seventeenth overall. The club won its first title in 1906/07.

After falling short in the season decider last year, the team fully appreciated this victory.

The individual club awards were announced and presented on the evening and were calculated on all preliminary games plus the grand final.

  • Batting Aggregate – Jeremy Preston – 324 runs
  • Batting Average – Michael Preston – 250 runs at 83.0
  • Bowling Aggregate – Jeremy Preston – 14 wickets
  • Bowling Average – Graham Grinter – 6 wickets for 26 runs @ 4.33
  • Fielding Award – Jack Crowhurst – 12 votes
  • Captain’s Award – Liam Preston
  • Alister King Memorial Cricketer of the Year – Jeremy Preston – 529 points

The individual award winners are pictured above (from left) Adrian King, Graham Grinter, Michael Preston, Jeremy Preston, Jack Crowhurst and Liam Preston.

Adrian King became the eighth individual in the club’s history to be presented with a club Life Membership in acknowledgement of the significant contribution he has made during the 16 seasons he has been with the club.

In 157 games (to the end of the 2016/17 season) he has made 4,189 runs at an average of 27.20 runs per innings and taken 46 wickets. Behind the stumps, he has taken 153 catches and effected 37 stumpings.

King was also part of the two most recent Jeparit premierships, in 2007/08 and 2016/17.

Off the field, he has been treasurer of the club for 14 years, spent 10 years on the Association executive and has undertaken many other often behind the scenes tasks that need to be done to keep a successful club functioning.

He has also been successful in applying for grants to improve the club’s facilities, including to install a new pitch, install air conditioning in the club rooms, purchase a new mower for the ground and the recent purchase of a new pitch cover.

Liam Preston’s achievement of taking a rare double hat-trick, for the West Wimmera team in the Horsham District Cricket Association’s Under 16.5 competition semi final against Jung-Blackheath-Dimboola, was also acknowledged and he was presented with the ball from the game.

On top of the team achievement, Jeparit club members also featured highly in the Association individual awards which were presented after the last home and away games.

Competition for these was tight as the season included only six preliminary rounds which limited opportunities to take wickets and make runs. The grand final was not included when establishing the winners of these trophies.

Jeparit players Jeremy and Michael Preston shared five of the major Association awards, including Jeremy winning the coveted Wes Warrick Memorial Cricket of the Year trophy.

  • Batting Aggregate – Jeremy Preston – 275 runs
  • Batting Average – Michael Preston – 222 runs at 111.0
  • Bowling Aggregate – Jeremy Preston – 11 wickets
  • Bowling Average – Jeremy Preston – 11 wickets for 95 runs @ 8.63
  • Wes Warrick Memorial Cricketer of the Year – Jeremy Preston - 495 points

In addition to these awards, Jeremy Preston also came second in the Most Valuable Player award, and Jack Crowhurst came runner up in the Fielding Award with his brother Tom finishing third.
