Visitors to the Little Desert National Park and Mount Arapiles-Tooan State Park will be able to keep a little warmer this winter thanks to the upcoming installation of twenty-nine new fires pits at campsites throughout the two parks.

Zoe Wilkinson, Parks Victoria Area Chief Ranger for Wimmera, said that they recognise the role that campfires play in camping.

"We recognise that campfires can be a special part of the camping experience for people visiting our parks," she said.

"So we try and provide allocated fireplaces for our visitors to enjoy this experience and to help protect the environment in our parks."

Zoe explained the background of the design for the new fireplaces.

"This project has been a fantastic example of innovative design. We used a piece of thick, heavy metal pipe and a local engineering and welding company cut it into the segments that we could use as fire rings."

Campers are reminded to bring their own firewood as collection is not permitted.

Parks Victoria rangers also wish to remind campers that campfires are permitted only in fireplaces provided and must be cool to touch before you leave them.

Wood fires are permitted in these parks from 1 May to 31 October.
