Hockey | Junior State Country Championships
The eighth Junior State Hockey Championships are being held in Melbourne this week, and two players from the Wimmera will be there representing the North West Lightening zone. This event is the pinnacle representative junior hockey event for the winter season and is contested by six metropolitan zones and four regional zones, with both boys and girls divisions for Under 13, 15 and 17 age groups.

Kaniva’s Luke Shalders will be playing in the Under 15 division and Sandon Schultz from Warracknabeal is in the Under 17 boys team.

The Lightning zone encompasses the north western quarter of Victoria with players from Sunraysia (Mildura), Central Victoria (Bendigo), North Central and Wimmera associations making up the teams.

This will be Luke Shalders fifth consecutive year of Lightning zone hockey representation after three years in the under 13 age group and this is his second in under 15.

Sandon Schultz is playing at this level for the first time but he has participated in the summer training program once and was part of the Lightning under 17 squad which competed in the recent Senior State Country Championships representing the Sunraysia association where they came runners up in Division Two.

All Lightening teams participated in training sessions in Bendigo on Monday before travelling onto Melbourne where they will play four games on Tuesday and Wednesday, ladder position playoff games on Thursday and the finals will be held on Friday.

The tournament will involve around 960 players from all over the state and will be played at Footscray Hockey Centre and State Netball Hockey Centre in Melbourne.
