With six people killed, over 500 drink and drug drivers nabbed and 3129 speeding offences detected during the past four days, police have been left shaking their heads at Victorian road users and their willingness to risk people's lives.

Over 2100 of the motorists caught speeding were detected travelling 10 to 25 km/h over the limit, with a further 328 caught in excess of 25km/h over.

Two hundred and ninety nine drink driving offences were detected from the 147,130 preliminary breath tests conducted across the state. Two hundred and thirty four drug offences were also detected from 1512 roadside drug tests.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said it is concerning that the number of drug drivers has increased from last year's operation and one in every six motorists detected indicated drugs in their system.

"Time and time again we plead to those taking to our roads to take care, to not speed, to not use phones and to not drink and drive," AC Fryer said.

"It is frustrating and just terribly sad that over the weekend another six families now face the true reality of road trauma.

"With the tragic death of two motorcyclists, two drivers and two passengers in which five of the six occurred on country roads, our focus on high risk user groups and country roads will remain strong.

"Safe road user behaviour starts with every single one of us, when we get behind the wheel or the bike or even walk down the street.

"The operation may have finished however our members will still be focused on keeping you safe on the roads; there must be a responsibility though for all road users to do the same."
