Following the late burst of summer experienced during the week which saw temperatures reach 37 degrees in Horsham on Wednesday, we are getting a taste of winter weather this weekend with much lower temperatures and strong winds.

Not much rain has yet been reported but there have been many report of raised dust.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Severe Weather Warning for elevated areas in the Wimmera, South West, Central, North Central, North East, West & South Gippsland, and East Gippsland warning areas.

  • This warning is for DAMAGING winds of 60 to 80 km/h are likely about elevated areas, extending to remaining parts of the warning area from mid morning.
  • Across the northern plains peak wind gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are possible.These peak wind gusts are most likely during the afternoon.
  • Isolated thunderstorms are expected during the day and may produce wind gusts above 90 km/h.
  • Destructive winds of 70 to 90 km/h with peak gusts of around 130 km/h are possible about the Alpine peaks (above 1200 metres) during Saturday afternoon and early evening.
  • Winds are expected to ease in most areas during Saturday evening although strong to gale force winds may persist about the Alpine region.

Local residents are being warned that this severe weather may result in building damage, fallen power lines, fallen trees and branches, broken windows, damage to vehicles and dangerous road conditions.
