|The Wimmera Hockey Association (WHA) has announced that its 2020 season will not go ahead in the interests of the health of members.
The WHA now joins other local sporting bodies including the Wimmera Football League, Wimmera Netball Association, and Horsham District Football Netball League that have all previously announced the cancellation of their senior competitions for this season.
With the current level of restrictions and the uncertainty as to what they might be over the next few months, it was agreed that it was not practical to go ahead with any level of competition at this time when taking into account the changes that would be required to how any competition could be run.
Wimmera Hockey Association Press Release -
2020 WHA Season Cancelled
In the interests of the health and safety of all our volunteers, members, and supporters, in consultation with our member clubs, the Wimmera Hockey Association (WHA) executive has tonight decided to cancel our 2020 winter season for all levels of competition.
With the uncertainty as to where restrictions may go over the coming weeks, we do not consider it appropriate to expect our volunteers to put in the work required to prepare for a season that may not go ahead, and we do not wish to put them or our other participants and supporters at any health risk.
The limitations that will come from adhering to the guidelines for return to competition from both the Victorian Government and Hockey Victoria will lead to restrictions on the important social aspects of the life or our clubs and Association, which we believe will take away one of the most important aspects that attract people to be involved in hockey in the Wimmera.
This decision gives some certainty to all those who may have been involved, and they can now focus on remaining fit and healthy and look forward to working with us to make the 2021 season all the better, to compensate for being unable to participate in their favourite sport this year.
We sincerely thank the leaders of both our Association and its member clubs for their efforts to come to this decision.
