Wimmera CMA is looking for more Wimmera people to join its ag and environment work crews as part of the State Government’s Working for Victoria program.

The CMA is looking for five more people to join its crews to complete land management projects such as weed spraying, pest animal control, fencing and wildlife monitoring. The flexible positions, which start in December, are for three months and are available to anyone living in the Wimmera catchment.

Wimmera CMA chief executive David Brennan said the Working for Victoria program had provided valuable employment for local people during a challenging year. He said the environment was also benefitting from the program.

He encouraged people looking for work over summer to apply for the new positions.

“Working for Victoria has enabled us to complete a range of community projects that are usually done through volunteers and community events. We still have priority projects to complete and are hoping we can recruit several more people to be part of the program.”

Wimmera crew member Daniel Gibson said he recommended applying for the program.

Daniel has been a crew member since June. He said he was grateful to get the position after relocating his family to the Wimmera for a new job that was suspended due to the pandemic.

“I have never worked in the natural resources industry and I’ve really enjoyed the new experiences of pulling fences out and building new fences at revegetation sites and a mixture of weed and pest animal control. I’ve received extra training and have learnt how much work goes into sustaining and improvement the environment. It’s a huge team effort and I am really enjoying the team environment,” Daniel said.

To apply you need to be a resident of the Wimmera catchment. Applications are through the Working for Victoria website at coronavirus.vic.gov.au/register-jobseeker
