Both West Wimmera Warriors teams resumed their seasons after the New Year break with Twenty20 games in Horsham on Saturday, and although both games were close, the neither local team finished with the points.

A Grade

All three A grade games of round nine were played on the Horsham City Oval on Saturday, with the Warriors meeting Laharum in the third of these matches, under the lights in the evening.

Laharum was asked to bat first and despite losing a wicket early, they set a brisk pace throughout their innings.

Tim Braendler took the first wicket when he bowled one of their openers when their score was on 14, but this was followed by a 70 run partnership which was only broken by a sharp run out effected by Ben Pollock.

Pollock then kept the Warriors in the game when he bowled the Laharum captain after the addition of only one more run.

An unbeaten 74 run partnership saw out Laharum’s twenty overs with a total of 158 for the loss of three wickets on the scoreboard.

A tough start to the Warriors’ innings saw four wickets fall by the time the team total had reached 51, but Mitch Dahlenburg made a game high score of 51 not out and combined with Adrian King (37 not out) in an unbeaten 81 run partnership to end the innings.

Unfortunately despite some big hitting by these batsmen in the closing overs of the game, the Warriors finished 26 runs short of the target.

Next week will see another full round of A grade Twenty20 games played on the Horsham City Oval, with the Warriors taking on Rupanyup-Minyip in the opening game at 1 pm.

B Grade

The B grade Warriors fell a mere seven runs short of their first victory of the season when they took on the Jung Tigers in a Twenty 20 match at the Horsham College oval.

The Tigers were restricted to 115 for the loss of 8 wickets, with Ash Dickinson and Jack Crowhurst taking three wickets each, Bailey Zimmermann and Darcy Bullen sharing the other two, and veteran Steve Graham and Luke Oldaker holding two catches each.

In the reply six of the eight Warriors’ batsmen who took the crease made it into double figures, with Oldaker contributing 19 and Dickinson and Bullen 18 each.

In a very close finish, at the end of the twenty overs, the Warriors were stranded just eight runs short of a maiden victory.

Next week Lubeck-Murtoa will travel to Sir Robert Menzies Park in Jeparit to take on the West Wimmera Warriors in the last of the one day matches in this division. This will be followed by four two day encounters as a lead into the finals in March.
