A great season for the Dimboola Bowling Club was highlighted on the weekend with two teams playing off in grand finals on Saturday.

With the games beginning earlier than usual due to the forecast high temperatures, the Third Division team narrowly defeated Coughlin Park 3 and although the first team put up a good performance, they could not overcome Coughlin Park 1.

Division Three

With an average age of about 78 the Dimboola Division Three side proved that age cannot weary them.

It was an exciting finish to the Third Division grand final with Dimboola 2 winning by the slim margin of 2 shots over the Coughlin Park 3 side on the Sunnyside green.

After 14 ends it wasn’t looking good for Dimboola as they were down by 8 shots with only 7 ends to play.

The team of Bryan Beattie, Bob Gooding, Bill Eldridge and Ian Barry were 1 shot up and the team of John Moar, Ian McRae, Gordon Miller and Max Pilmore were also 1 shot up but the team of Trevor Werner, Frank Neagle, Bill Ballard and Alex Orcsik were struggling being down by 10 shots.

So down to the last 7 ends, the premiership ends, Trevor Werner’s team picked up their game and after being down by 10 shots, 13-23, rallied and scored 12 shots to 3 over the final 7 ends to go down by only 1 shot.

Bryan Beattie’s side increased their lead and won by 2 shots and with John Moar’s team winning by 1 shot it was Dimboola winning by 2 shots, 62 to 60.

This was a fantastic performance and much deserved. Well done to everyone who played in division 3 during the year which resulted in this great win. A special mention to 95 year old Ian McRae, it was a great effort by Ian who played a fantastic game, Ian you are a legend.

Division One

It wasn’t the desired result in Division 1, and they went down to the strong Coughlin Park side by 30 shots, also at Sunnyside.

After 8 ends Coughlin Park had jumped to a 19 shot lead which put the pressure on Dimboola.

The team of Alan Krahe, Wayne Albrecht, Ron Gaulke and Rob Clark was down by 2 shots and the team of Peter O’Loughlin, Greg Cook, Rick Danisch and Judith Albrecht was down by 1 shot.

Rob Pyers, Darryl Both, Peter Ross and Merv Roberts were down by 3 and Geoff Gazelle, Darryl Argall, Daniel Danisch and Josh Cook were down 2-15.

This put Dimboola under the hammer and as a whole they were unable to recover going down 60-90.

Alan Krae’s team had a great tussle drawing 18-18, Geoff Gazelle’s team fought back from a poor start to only go down by 1 shot 25-26, Peter O’Loughlin’s team finished 8 shots down and Rob Pyers team struggled after the break going down by 21 shots 12-33.

A big thank you to everyone who made the effort to travel to Sunnyside on Saturday to support both sides.

Even though the result on Saturday for the Division One team wasn’t good, the Dimboola Bowling Club can be proud of their efforts for the season - a premiership for Division Three and runner up in Division One and with the mid-week side finishing third, it was a great effort for a small club which some weeks struggled for numbers, well done to all.
