The Blackheath-Dimboola cricketers won the 2018/19 B grade Horsham Cricket Association premiership with an resounding victory over Colts on Sunday afternoon.

Over the two days of the game all of the players contributed in some way, either with the bat, ball or in the field to help the team to a solid 8 wicket victory, chasing down the target with 29 overs to spare.

On Saturday morning the Colts’ captain won the toss and took the opportunity to bat first on the turf wicket at Dudley Cornell Park in Horsham and but his team struggled from the start.

The first wicket fell in the seventh over with just 13 runs on the board when Michael McGough held a catch off Dwayne McDonald’s bowling.

Colts had progressed their score to 31 off 16 overs when Elliott Braithwaite took the ball as the first change bowler and after only five balls in his first over the Colts had slumped to 4 for 31, with Braithwaite finishing this over with three wickets without conceding a run

The innings was steadied with a 39 run partnership for the fifth wicket, but from when Braithwaite took his fourth with the team total on 70, the wickets fell regularly and only a 26 run partnership for the ninth wicket gave Colts a reasonable total to defend.

The final innings score was 136, with Braithwaite dominating the bowling with 6 for 22 off 10.1 overs, but he had great support from McDonald with 2 for 27, Harry Young with 1 for 2 off four overs and Sommers with 1 for 31.

Young, McGough and Chris Ross all held catches in the field.

By the end of play on Saturday afternoon, the Bulls had reduced this target by ten runs without the loss of any wickets, so when the game resumed on Sunday morning, with Young on three and Trent McGough on seven, 127 more runs were needed for victory.

Sensible batting saw these two batsmen survive together until the 42nd over and they had put on 112 runs when Young was the first Bulls’ batsman to be dismissed, for 53.

When McGough was bowled for 65 in the 49th over the team was just five runs short of victory.

Sam Polack scored the winning run, and finished not out on 12, and Brodie Cramer was the other batsman at the crease on four not out.

This gave the Blackheath-Dimboola B grade team their second premiership in four seasons.

In the other senior grand finals, Homers had a good weekend, with their A grade team defeating Jung Tigers for that title, and their C grade team winning their grade grand final against Colts.
