With the impending commencement of construction of the new Dimboola Library, Hindmarsh Shire Council has been consulting with Public Transport Victoria, V/Line and Firefly Coaches regarding the location of V/Line coach service parking in Dimboola.

Following the first sod-turning ceremony on Thursday 16 May 2019, Hindmarsh Shire Council has commenced discussions with the architect and contractor in relation to the commencement of construction.

Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor Cr Ron Ismay said that the expansion of the library building means that the bus stops need to be moved.

“As the existing coach parking, drop off and pick up zones are located within the rear car park of the Dimboola Library, they will be impacted by the construction of the new Library. Council has been identifying other suitable locations for parking for both east and westbound coach services.”

It is proposed that eastbound coaches will stop in Lloyd Street, adjacent to the old National Bank building, and westbound coaches will stop in Lochiel Street beside the old Dimboola Hotel site - see the map at the bottom of this article.

Cr Ismay said that both of these locations are still within easy walking distance to cafes, shops, public amenities and the supermarket.

Council representatives met with V/Line and Firefly Coaches on-site on Wednesday 5 June 2019 and whilst in-principal support was provided for the proposed sites there are still a number of issues that need to be resolved prior to the locations being endorsed by Public Transport Victoria and V/Line.

“Council recognises the important community connectivity and economic benefits that the coach services provide to Dimboola which the main reason Council has attempted to relocate the parking zones within the main business area of Dimboola,” Cr Ismay said.

Despite the new Dimboola Library and associated future landscaping behind the existing Library necessitating the need for the permanent relocation of coach parking, the hope is that the redeveloped area will become a highly valued community open space. The aim is that this area will provide a great link between the business area in the centre of Dimboola and the Nine Creeks Reserve, which will also be the commencement of the Wimmera River Discovery Trail.

Cr Ismay said that any members of the public who have queries about the proposed locations of the coach parking zones can contact Phil King at Council - on 5391 4444, 0429 406 709 or by email to pking@hindmarsh.vic.gov.au.
