The Warracknabeal club will host a Wimmera Hockey Association round of games for the first time this season on their home ground at Anzac Park next Saturday, and there are a number of enticing match-ups to be played.

Open

Two in-form teams will provide the focus in the Open competition in round six with the Warracknabeal Hoops, fresh off a confidence boosting win over the Nhill Rangers, taking on the Dimboola Burras who pushed the undefeated Tigers to the last few minutes of their clash last weekend, clashing in a mouth-watering encounter between two teams that appear to be serious contenders later in the season.

The incentive for the Hoops is to increase the gap between themselves in second place and the rest of the competition, and for the Burras it is to consolidate third place on the ladder in order to mount a challenge for a top two finish in later games.

The Kaniva Cobras scored their first win for the season last weekend and will be looking at their second when they take on the Nhill Rangers. The latter team started this season strongly but have fallen away over recent games as they have struggled when some significant players are unavailable and the Kaniva team showed promise early but were unlucky on a number of occasions not to take the points. The winner of this game should finish the round in the top four.

The next team to have the opportunity to challenge the undefeated Yanac Tigers will be the Horsham Hurricanes, and it is difficult to see them inflicting the Tigers first loss in nearly three seasons, but it is the perfect opportunity for them to work on their game against a strong opponent.

Women

Outright third place on the Women’s ladder will be the prize for the winner of the game between Kaniva and the Nhill Thunderbirds. Both teams have shown good form over recent games so this game could go either way.

The Dimboola Roos will be full of confidence after scoring a win over the previously undefeated Yanac last round, and with Warracknabeal yet to find a winning combination this season, it is difficult to see the Roos dropping this one.

With Yanac determined to remind everyone that they are still the flag favourites despite a narrow loss last round, it falls upon the Horsham Jets to try to extend Yanac’s losing run to two games, and if they can put their best team on the field they are in with a chance.

Under 16

The Yanac Warriors have dominated the Under 16 competition so far this season, as they sit undefeated on top of the ladder with an average winning margin of more than 8 goals, and although the Horsham Bombers have shown enough potential in the first six games that they are a serious contender for the finals, if they can keep the Warriors to under ten goals they will have played a good game.

The Warrack Revengers will welcome the Dimboola Kangaroos to their home ground to open play on Saturday morning, and will have to play at their best if they are to win and maintain their place in the top four. The Kangaroos are yet to win this season, but with their best players on the field they can trouble any team in the competition.

The game between the Nhill Leopards and Kaniva Raiders puts second place on the ladder on the line, with a good win for either team.

Under 12 Development Program

The Under 12 Development Program will see the Warracknabeal Avengers play the Dimboola Kookaburras, the Horsham Black Hawks take on the Yanac Lowan Stars and the Nhill Bandits meet the Kaniva Rampagers, all at 12.30, whilst an umpires’ information session will be held at the same time as part of the ongoing training of the Association’s match officials.
