After a trying first season in the Horsham Cricket Association, the senior West Wimmera Warriors team opened their 2019/20 season with a comfortable win over Rupanyup-Minyip on Davis Park in Nhill.
Taking the opportunity to bat first, the Warriors started strongly with w 51 run opening partnership between Mitch Dahlenburg (52) and Luke Smith (26) and a second wicket partnership between Dahlenburg and Dylan Webb (27).
Josh Lees (26) held together with the middle order and kept the runs ticking over and despite losing some late wickets in the chase for quick runs, the team total was at 163 for the loss of eight wickets at the end of their allocated forty overs. Dom Colombera was the only other batsman to make double figures with 11.
The Rupanyup-Minyip batsmen began their innings slowly in the face of some tight bowling by Lees and Tim Braendler who both only conceded ten runs each from six and seven overs respectably.
Wickets fell regularly throughout their innings, with the opening stand of 26 runs being their biggest partnership for the innings.
The best of the bowlers was Liam Preston who finished with 3 for 24 off six overs, and Braendler, Brad Keller, Smith and Jordan Gurry all took one wicket each.
Next week the Warriors’ B grade team will host Quantong at Davis Park for another one day game, and the C grade team will play their first game for 2019/20 when they travel to the Holy Trinity College oval in Horsham to take on Homers.
