Hundreds of athletes and supporters from rowing clubs from across Victoria converged on Dimboola over the weekend for the 132nd Dimboola Regatta and the 10th Head of the Wimmera.
Saturday’s event was the biggest since 2005, before the drought, and just under 60 entries on Sunday made it the biggest field in the ten-year history of the Head of the Wimmera.
In cool and blustery conditions on Saturday local club members competed in 21 races with the Female C Grade Coxed Quad Scull, Male Under 15 Double Scull, Female Under 15 Coxed Quad Scull, Female D Grade Coxed Quad Scull and Tonnis Wolthuis in the Male D Grade Single Scull all enjoying ultimate success after qualifying for their respective finals.
A highlight was the marking of the fiftieth anniversary of a crew from Dimboola winning the prestigious Victorian Four-oared Sprint Championship at the 1969 regatta, with a crew including Rodney Pilmore, from the Banks Rowing Club, teamed up with locals Robin Kuhne, John Nichols, Lyndon Kuhne, and cox Ben Salter competing in the Male Masters Coxed Fours.
Pilmore was part of that winning crew fifty years ago, as was Ivan Kuhne, Robin and Lyndon’s father who passed away earlier this year.
Better conditions greeted the participants on Sunday morning for he 10th Head of the Wimmera, with a record 56 crews making the 6.2 kilometre row upstream from the Dimboola Rowing Club to the start line, and then the same distance back under time trial conditions.
Six crews which included Dimboola club members completed the course, with composite crews in the Male Under 15 Coxed Quad Scull (Hawthorn/Dimboola) and the Male C Grade Eight (Corio Bay/Dimboola) winning their divisions.
