Cricket | Twin centuries dominate for the Warriors
Centuries by both Mitch Dahlenburg and Nathan Alexander dominated the scorecard from the West Wimmera Warriors’ B grade game against Lubeck-Murtoa at Davis Park on Saturday, and their B grade team scored a confidence-boosting limited-overs win over Laharum.

A Grade Bulls

The Blackheath-Dimboola Bulls were unable to get a team together to take to the field against Laharum, and as this was the first day of a two-day game, it will be another two weeks before their next hit-out will be against the Noradjuha-Toolondo Bullants at the Horsham City Oval from February 22.

B Grade Warriors

At Davis Park in Nhill, the Lubeck-Murtoa captain took a big gamble and gave the home team the opportunity to bat first on day one of their two-day B grade clash.

After taking their second wicket with the Warriors’ score on just 5, this bold decision appeared to be paying off, but this brought Mitch Dahlenburg and Nathan Alexander together which heralded the start of a 198 run partnership for the third wicket.

Alexander was on 107 when he was the third batsman dismissed when the team total was on 203, continuing a productive season which has seen him make five scores above fifty in seven innings so far this season.

Dahlenburg made it into triple figures for the third time this season with a score of 104, which was also his eighth score over 50 in 12 innings in the 2019/20 season.

Useful middle-order contributions of 23 by Josh Cramer, 15 from Liam Preston, 13 not out by Todd Alexander and 12 from Luke Smith allowed the team to register 289 for the loss of 8 wickets at the end of their allocated overs, setting a challenging total for the Mudlarks to chase next week.

The game will conclude on Davis Park next Saturday afternoon.

C Grade Warriors

In a one-day game at Sir Robert Menzies Park in Jeparit, the C grade Warriors registered a solid win against Laharum who went into the round one place higher on the ladder than the home team.

Only two of the Laharum batsmen reached double figures in the face of some tight bowling and enthusiastic fielding which allowed the Warriors to restrict their opponents to 54 off 31.3 overs.

The leading bowlers were Shane ‘the Goat’ Gusman who took 3 for 8 off 5 overs and Ruby James, who recently captained the Western Waves under-17 girls to a Youth Premier League premiership on the Junction Oval in Melbourne, who finished with 2 wickets for 10 runs off 6 overs.

The other wickets were shared one each by Austin Merrett, Jack Crowhurst, Bailey Zimmermann, and Trevor James and one fell to a run out.

Above - Captain Shane Gusman leads his team off the ground after restricting Laharum to just 54 at Jeparit on Saturday.

This victory target required less than a run and a half per over, slow and steady progress saw the required runs scored in 22 overs with the major contributors bring Merrett with 19 and Jack Crowhurst with 14 not out.

This win will give the Warriors valuable confidence in the lead up to meeting the same opponent next Sunday in the Twenty20 grand final on the Horsham City Oval, and has seen them overtake Laharum to rise to second place on the ladder.

Next Saturday the Warriors will travel to the Dock Lake Reserve to take on Horsham Saints which is a chance to score points off another finals aspirant.
