Hindmarsh Shire Council urges residents to continue their recycling habits and be sure to double-check they are recycling the right items.

Advice from their waste contractor, Wimmera Mallee Waste is that a new recycling agreement with Cleanaway Waste Management will see all kerbside recycling go back to being recycled in the future.

Following the closure of SKM recycling facilities in Victoria, Hindmarsh Shire Council along with neighbouring Councils had to dispose of their recyclable materials into landfill. From 1 June 2020, the new recycling agreement will come into place and recyclable materials will be diverted from landfill and processed by Cleanaway.

Cleanaway recycling facilities are located at Coolaroo and Laverton, meaning there will be an additional cost to support recycling rather than landfill.

From the start of May 2020, Wimmera Mallee Waste has been keeping an eye on recycling bins. Any bins that contain inappropriate contents, get a sticker on the bin to ensure that recycling improves.

Hindmarsh Shire Mayor Cr Rob Gersch said, “The community’s ongoing support with recycling is greatly appreciated and we thank those who have continued to practice recycling in recent months.

“It is important to note that Hindmarsh Shire Council does not make any profit from the provision of waste and kerbside collections. Waste charges are calculated to match the cost of collection and disposal and are separate from general rates.”
