The Wimmera football landscape will look different next year after the JR Storm and Southern Mallee Giants voted this week to merge.

While the senior football teams from both clubs played in their respective grand finals in the Horsham District and Wimmera Football Netball Leagues this season, both have recognised the implications of dwindling numbers of younger players and volunteers.

Both clubs held Special Resolution meetings on Wednesday evening, where their members voted in favour of an amalgamation prior to the 2024 season.

Each has put together a sub-committee that will meet to begin to work out some of the details, with a name and colours for the new entity among the priorities.
Joint statement issued by JR Storm and Southern Mallee Giants

A big few weeks, months and years, for the Jeaprit Rainbow Storm and Southern Mallee Giants Culimnated in each club’s members gathering last night and ultimately voting in favour of amalgamating our clubs prior to the 2024 season.

At the moment, that’s all there is to report! Each club has put together a sub-committee that will meet in the coming weeks to work out some of the finer details (we’re probably going to need a name & club colours sooner rather than later!)before a public meeting is held to elect a balanced committee, to lead us into the first years as a new club.

Congratulations to everyone that has worked hard behind the scenes to pull all this together, and will continue to do so in the coming months, before we meet our opponents as a new club at the start of the season. Both the Storm and Giants have dealt with plenty of change in the past decade, so there’s no reason why we won’t hit the ground running once again if we all continue to put our best foot forward. Stay tuned for more updates & announcements as they come to hand.

Can’t wait to see how his pans out over the next 12 months.

Go Storm
Go Giants
And Go Whatever We’re Gonna Be in 2024!
