Preparations are almost complete for the Easter Fishing Competition which will be held this Saturday on the picturesque Wimmera River at Jeparit.

A dedicated team of volunteers have been working for months making the arrangements for this popular annual event which brings many visitors to the town.

Camping spots along the river are at a premium in the lead up to and during the Easter long weekend as keen anglers stake out their favourite spot where they hope to catch ‘the big one’.

There are fifteen major prizes in each of the senior and junior divisions for the heaviest fish, along with two in each division for the heaviest carp.

The prize list also includes a mystery weight and awards for the heaviest Redfin and Catfish not included in the top 15 prizes.

There will be a raffle on the Saturday with all proceeds going to the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, and the Jeparit Fire Brigade will also be canvassing the town and camping areas collecting donations for this worthy cause on Friday.

Fishing for the competition begins at 7.30 am on Easter Saturday and runs until 3 pm, after which the presentations will take place at the Anglers’ clubhouse at the Jeparit Golf Club on Lake Road soon after fishing finishes.

Anglers can register from 12 noon tomorrow, Good Friday, until 6 pm and again on Easter Saturday morning from 7 am at the clubrooms.

The competition area stretches from the boat ramp behind the caravan park in town to the boat ramp at the Ski Club near Lake Hindmarsh, with only a few areas out of bounds. These are outlined on a map which is available on the Jeparit Anglers’ Club website and with registration.

Only fishing from the river bank is permitted in the marked zones, with no fishing from bridges, boats or other crafts allowed.

Jeparit Lions Club will have a barbeque and drinks available at the presentation area from 2:30 pm.
